Apple iPad, Perfect for Seminars, We can integrate with your apps

July 30th, 2010

There’s a lot of talk about the new Apple iPad and how it can be utilised for mobile business computing instead of a laptop.

So why would you use an iPad instead ?

Our customers are finding the device extremely useful particularly in the areas of seminar registration and customer sign-ups at venues. The built-in Wifi and mobile phone data network access allows the iPad to talk back to your website applications or just send a simple email communication with the customer’s details for processing later.

I attended an IT industry event in Melbourne this week and observed first hand the iPad in use for customers who made enquiries with an exhibition vendor – the iPad application was a web interface which collected the customers contact details, along with their particular area of interest.

Our application development team can help your organisation benefit from the Apple iPad at your own company functions and events, with simple registration or complete integration with an existing website portal or company application.

Even better, with My Hosted Exchange you can connect your iPad to our Hosted Microsoft Exchange service and begin communicating via email with staff and customers immediately. Just like the Fedex delivery system, customer registers at your event, then receives an email immediately with the event information and any other relevant details about your organisation and the potential service offered to clients.

Talk to us about the new Apple iPad and how you can save time, collect reliable data, and service clients effectively.

Internet Filter, Our Industry, Your Cost

July 7th, 2010

Many people don’t understand or probably don’t really care about the forthcoming internet filter which the current Government is implementing.

Our organisation is part of the internet community, delivering internet services and content to businesses and families across Australia.

Whilst we support a safer internet experience and we object strongly to offensive or inappropriate content being delivered to Australian families and in particular children, we cannot support a mandatory filter which imposes large financial cost to our industry for very little result.

Deploying infrastructure, equipment and software to run an “internet filter” won’t solve the issue of inappropriate content being delivered to the wrong persons, instead it will just encourage people to find a way around the filter.

In fact, it’s already happened. The internet filter can be easily worked around.

Big deal you might say.

Well, it is, and here’s why.

When your service provider is required under law to implement infrastructure, equipment and software to provide the Government’s proposed internet filter, this will come at great cost.

This cost will be passed to you, the consumer.

But it gets better. The filter, which you will be paying for through higher internet access costs, can easily be worked around.

I’m not going to talk about how to work around the system here, that’s not the purpose of this communication.

The issue is that we have non-technical parties making technical decisions, requiring mandatory implementation for something that can be easily worked around – it just won’t work.

The fact that your internet access will be monitored, recorded and tracked is a separate matter, however this is also concerning as your every online request will be available for audit by the Government.

The major concern for our industry is cost, cost, cost.

Talk to your local political member, write to parliament, call talkback radio and discuss the internet filter.

The great internet filter will soon become the great white elephant.

Let’s think about this properly before rushing into more cost for Australian business and families, there is a better way.

Melbourne CBD Floods affecting some backup network services

March 6th, 2010

No doubt our Melbourne customers will already be aware of the CBD hail storms and flooding currently taking place.
This has affected our backup DataCentre network for DC1 and DC3 located in Melbourne City.

No services are down or interrupted, however the network outage does affect our ability to failover in the event of complete systems outage at DC1 and DC3.

At this stage we are working with our network providers and will advise when the backup network is again available.

This only applies to our 2 DataCentre facilities located in the Melbourne City area.
At the moment no customers are impacted by this event.

The Great Mobile Test continues in Akaroa NZ

March 4th, 2010

Hi again, Darren here from My Hosted Exchange.
Our Aussie team have joined our Kiwi counterparts for testing of two leading mobile phone handsets – the Apple iPhone 3Gs and Nokia’s e75.

Today, the team are travelling around Akaroa, near Christchurch, with a goal of testing how these devices cope with internet access and email communications under ‘not so good’ signal strength.

You see, there’s been a lot of talk and ‘noise’ in the industry regarding these handsets and just how reliable they are in challenging conditions.
I personally have used both phones, however I no longer use either. This is probably a good thing as my opinion won’t sway and testing outcomes.

Stay tuned as we head around regional (and metropolitan cities) in New Zealand to find challenging terrain for testing of these leading handsets on the Telecom and Vodafone networks.

Cheers,

Darren

The Great Mobile Device Test

February 23rd, 2010

After much pressure from our New Zealand counter parts, we’ve finally agreed on the Kiwi country as our testing ground for the new Apple iPhone 3Gs and Nokia e75 handsets.
We chose New Zealand for the challenging terrain and marginal reception areas, of which (in comparison to Australia and Telstra coverage) there are many.

The goal is to thoroughly test not only the speed of the new Apple iPhone 3Gs, but the ability to connect with our My Hosted Exchange email service in regional areas.
One of the most talked about support issues for mobile phones connected to Hosted Exchange platforms is the ability to connect and operate with Hosted Microsoft Exchange Server whilst travelling away from metropolitan areas where signal strength is not the same quality as we take for granted in CBD areas.

So, 2 of our tech team members are off to New Zealand, where the local team in Auckland are taking them on a trip down the Coromandel Peninsula to Tauranga, then onto the south of the North Island to Wellington and beyond.

The timing of this exercise is certainly interesting, as the last few days have been a disaster for New Zealand’s leading mobile phone provider, Telecom, with another outage on their XT (3G aka: Telstra) mobile network for customers in the south of the north island, which is where our team will be this week.

Stay tuned, the results could be very interesting.
If you’d like to follow the trek with our New Zealand friends, you can do that via Twitter – follow em3_Australia or our team at My Hosted Exchange (MyHostedExchAU).

I travel between Australia and New Zealand often for business and family, so I’m personally keen to see the results on not only the effect of marginal reception whilst using Hosted Exchange services, but the overall performance of both the Apple iPhone 3Gs and the Nokia e75 handsets.

Best,
